Definitions

A bigay/bisexual gay is someone who identifies as both bisexual and gay at the same time. People who use this label usually have a complicated relationship with their gender identity or have a sexuality that doesn't neatly fit into the categories of monosexual (attraction to one gender) gay or bisexual. Because of this, they combine the two labels as a way to express this complicated identity. While it might be harder for people to understand than identifying as only gay or only bisexual, identity is not always simple.

The reasons a person might identify as bigay are as numerous as there are bigay people. Everyone has a different reason and experience that led to them choosing this label. Some of the most common reasons include:

➼The split attraction model, for example identifying as bisexual and homoromantic or homosexual and biromantic
➼Abrosexuality, where someone might be gay most of the time but bisexual sometimes or vice versa
➼They are usually a monosexual gay, but have a partner who came out as nonbinary or a trans woman and remain in a relationship with them but do not want to invalidate their partner's gender identity
➼They are mostly attracted to men and nonbinary people who consider themselves to fall under gay attraction, but are attracted to women and nonbinary people who don't fall under gay attraction on rare occasions
➼They are attracted to more than one gender, but would only be in a relationship with one
➼They are attracted to more than one gender but have been in a long term relationship with someone of the same gender for such a long time that other attraction feels irrelevant
➼They used to experience attraction to more than one gender, but now only experience attraction to one
➼They identified as bisexual or gay for a long time and that label and community became an intricate part of who they were, before figuring outthey are not the original label they had used, so they use the label bigay to show they are part of both communities

And of course these are only some of the reasons someone might choose to identify as bigay! Likewise, experiencing any of the above does not mean you need to identify as bigay. Labels exist for comfort, and while some people with the above experiences might feel more comfortable labeling themselves as bigay, others might feel more comfortable using just bisexual/gay or another label entirely, all of these are equally valid options.

BiGay Flags

There is no single flag that is collectively agreed upon by the bigay community as the bigay flag. There are many different versions, all with similar concepts, floating around, and all are equally acceptable to use. The bigay flag most used is the flag created by bi-lesbian, but the creators opinions on shipping discourse and the saturated colors make it controversial.

Controversy

TW: queerphobia and exclusionism

Claim: Labels like bigay imply gay people can be attracted to women

To begin, not all bisexual people are attracted to women. Bisexual is an identity for attraction to two or more genders, and that includes nonbinary genders. While not all people attracted to nonbinary genders consider themselves bisexual or on the multisexual spectrum (attraction to 2+ genders, sometimes abreviated mspec) many people do. Beyond that, exceptions are not unheard of in regards to anyone's sexuality, including monosexuality. Someone identifying as bigay because they are attracted to women extremely rarely is no different than a monosexual gay experiencing attraction to women when they never have before. Some gay people being attracted to women also does not make unwanted advances acceptable. Predators do not need the justification of bigays to be predators, they will violate consent regardless. The odds of a predator justifying unwanted advances with the existence of bigays is unlikely to happen because the label is unknown, but even if it did, predatory behavior isn't acceptable just because of someone else's label. No means no, regardless of bigays.

Claim: Labels like bigay are bimisic because they enforce the idea of picking a side

Someone's own experience with their own sexuality does not cause other people oppression. The label bigay is not being forced on anyone. Someone making
